Inlays and Onlays

In cases where a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be restored and protected with a filling, an inlay or onlay can be used.

What is an inlay and an onlay?

These custom-made restorations are created outside of the mouth and designed to be a specific match for the size and shape of the given defect. We might suggest an inlay or onlay if you’re presenting with damage or decay that’s too extensive for a filling, but not quite severe enough for a crown.

Onlays are the larger version of an inlay and cover the biting surface of a tooth. These are used if the damage is not limited to the central part of your tooth and when the tooth’s cusps are vulnerable.

Why might I need an inlay or onlay?

We may recommend an inlay or onlay if:

• You have a damaged tooth that’s at risk of fracturing when performing normal everyday functions.
• The damage is not significant enough for a crown.

What can I expect from the inlays/onlays process?

You can expect the whole inlay/onlay process to take 2-3 appointments, and it’s not dissimilar to the process behind getting a filling.

• Examination to assess the level of damage present.
• The decay is removed and the cavity is cleaned.
• An impression of the tooth is taken so that the inlay or onlay can be custom made. A temporary filling will be given whilst your restoration is being made in the lab.
• Once created, the inlay/ onlay will be bonded to your tooth securely in position.
• We will check your bite to ensure the restoration is a great fit for your tooth.
