Crowns are one of the most frequently used treatments in general dentistry and can benefit patients in multiple ways.

Crowns are a highly effective answer to ensuring a cracked, decayed, chipped or damaged tooth becomes functional and looks healthy again.

What is a crown?

Crowns cover the tooth that requires treatment, and are sometimes also called ‘caps’. They fit over the whole surface of an affected tooth. There are a number of different materials that can be used to make crowns, from composite resin and porcelain to metal alloys and ceramics. Factors such as a patient’s budget and where the affected tooth is located in the mouth determine the type of material used.

Whatever the material used, your crown will be with care and skill. We take great pride in making crowns that not only serve a practical purpose but that look visually indistinguishable from a real tooth.

Why might I need a crown?

We may suggest a crown if you:

• Have a weakened tooth.
• Your tooth is cracked or chipped.
• To form part of a bridge, if you have missing teeth that need replacing.
• Have a cavity that’s too substantial for a filling.

What can I expect during the crown process?

The crowning process usually takes two appointments and involves the following steps:

• Examination and removal of any decay present.
• Preparation of the tooth to accommodate the crown.
• 3D digital scan is taken to send to our dental technician, responsible for creating your crown.
• Temporary crown provided whilst you wait for your second appointment.
• During your second visit, the permanent crown can be fitted and checked over to make sure it fits in with the way your teeth bite together.
